How To Buy Diamonds | A Diamond Buying Guide
Buying a diamond can be tricky. And walking into a jewelry store with no education can be costly. And there is the rub- no knowledge on How To Buy Diamonds= tricky situation. The hard part was getting to this point. The point of making and investment and commitment to another. The purchase part should be easy with just a little bit of research. Follow along my Diamond Buying Guide and learn How To Buy Diamonds with confidence.
1. Set a budget:
First rule of this Diamond Buying Guide. Lets get rid of the old rule of 2 months of salary. No rule applies to everyone and their situation. This is a symbol of love and commitment not going above your means. With that said, its important to know your significant others expectations. Do they prefer dainty like this classic .96 engagement ring solitaire ring. Or do they like more flair and dazzle like this 1.54 carat on a stunning Cambridge Halo Platinum Ring. But learning you can adjust your search with small changes. As a start get a baseline. For example you know you want a 1 carat diamond engagement ring so start there.
2. Pick a shape
The beginning of your search must be the diamond shape. Each diamond shape has different search criteria such as clarity, symmetry and color that works best. Each shape has different cost so searching multiple shapes at the same time will leave you frustrated. For example Take a look at this 1 carat SI 1 clarity H color Princess cut diamond for $3,340 vs this Round 1 carat SI1 clarity H color Diamond for $4,610. Each shape has there pros and cons. Feel free to dive deeper in my Diamond Shapes Article for advice per specific shape.
Round is the most popular. If they aren’t leaving hints of their favorite shape, take a look at their pintrest or maybe ask a best friend to be sure you pick the diamond shape of their dreams.
3. Learn the 4 C’s and Narrow your search:
Once you have chosen the shape, its time to understand how the 4 C’s (Carat, Clarity, Color and Cut) interact with it. The 4 C’s represent the most important definitive characteristics of a diamond. I always recommend to start with your goal in carat weight. So when you go to search a site like James Allen, you can specifically only choose to see 1 carat diamonds. See below a sample of what the search sliders look like.
Start at the goal carat weight. You can then adjust the values to see where the prices is in conjunction with your budget. If you are under budget, congrats! Feel free to go for a heavier carat weight. If its over budget, keep adjusting the parameters of clarity and color to see how close your budget is reached. Hopefully you have found this Diamond Buying Guide helpful thus far. Reach out and email me if you need help navigating these sites. Once you have found some options, go even deeper and check there length to width ratios, fluorescence, table percentages etc. Feel free to reach out to me, A GIA trained Diamond Expert to help you on your choices.
4. Choosing your engagement ring:
What I love about the different engagement ring options is it can help with the visual tremendously. Lets say you were shy with reaching a certain carat goal. A ring choice like a Halo, Vintage style, or 3 Stone ring will give it the extra size to appear much larger. So a .80 carat diamond on a beautiful Halo diamond engagement ring setting can be a stunner.
Again personal engagement ring preference of your significant other is important. If you are unable to find any information, you can always go by whats popular. Click on this link or banner to see an article from Blue Nile on their Top 20 Engagement Ring Styles. This will give you a understanding on what engagement rings are popular. You can also go to recently purchased rings from clients, filter the shape, price and style to see what others are doing and get inspired. Click here to see some recent clients rings.

For me to recommend any business, they must meet certain criteria. They must prove valuable to my clients in regards to savings and selection| EXPECT 20%-40% LOWER PRICES THAN TRADITIONAL JEWELERS |, time doing business(legitimacy), reputation, and return policy. I have chosen the top 3 online vendors on the world wide web. They are the best in terms of cost, quality, 100% solid reputation, 1,000’s of happy customers, solid -no questions asked return policies. If other sites weren’t chosen its because either their pricing was higher, had inferior diamonds with inferior certifications and were unknown. I highly recommend to visit all three businesses, find your favorite diamond in each and compare your findings. Each have pros and cons, but each site has beautiful Diamonds at great prices. How To Buy Diamonds doesn’t have to be difficult with the sites below.
James Allen is my favorite vendor. They revolutionized the ability to get the clearest image of a Diamond with a 360 degree HD image/video and a zoom in up to 40x on all their Diamonds. This without question leaves no doubt on what you are buying. I argue the ability to see your diamond more clearly than in a physical retail store is a massive plus for you. James Allen has incredible prices that will easily beat retail store pricing. They have an a amazing 30 day Free no hassle return policy and have been in business for over ten years with countless positive reviews from real customers. A big plus, they have great choices on engagement rings as well. Click on this link or Picture to search their inventory.
Blue Nile was the original online giant that opened in 1999! They probably have the largest selection. In the past they didn’t have images of their inventory but because of James Allen , they were forced to adapt and they now have a large amount of their inventory with images. They have over 150,000 diamonds in inventory and Blue Nile has an incredible 30 day free return policy as well that is insured. Click on this link or the Blue Nile Logo to see their inventory.
Brian Gavin opened in 2009. He is a 5th generation Master Diamond Cutter. He is an authority when it comes to crafting Hearts & Arrows Diamonds and is well respected in the industry. The company sells reasonably priced diamonds. An excellent brilliant Cut grade is the focus of Brain Gavin and its his biggest PRO. Many stones are AGS Certified with excellent cuts and this is helpful with fancy cut diamonds(Princess, Cushion,Emerald, etc). A negative is a 15 day return policy. Most will prefer more time however its still a respectable amount of time. A client should know quickly if pleased with a purchase. Click of the Brian Gavin Logo or this link to see their site.
